People often ask “what is a Virtual Desktop?” and “what is a Free Virtual Desktop?”. Let’s start with the Virtual Desktop question first.

Virtual Desktops are also called Cloud Desktops or Remote Desktops too. For most people, that doesn’t help them understand the term any better, but it will once explained.

A Virtual Desktop is typically thought of as a computer desktop displayed on a screen delivered by another PC, Server or Operating System. A PC desktop in conventional terms usually refers to the desktop that is running off the OS on the PCs main hard drive. A Virtual Desktop runs from somewhere else.

The same is true for a Cloud Desktop or Remote Desktop. The Cloud Desktop tends to be running from a server instance in the Cloud somewhere. The Remote Desktop can be the same and also often refers to accessing a particular PC’s Desktop from another device on the network or Internet. So these terms can be the same or have slight variations depending on what you are actually talking about.

Free is also a term with a number of meanings. Something that is “Free” in the real world often implies a conditional price. Something might be Free if you buy something else, or the third one may be Free if you buy the first two at a regular prices and many other variations of Marketing attempts to separate money from your wallet. It still may be a good deal though, but Free, in the “real” world often is more of a promotion than something you actually just get for Free.

On the Web it can be much better. We have Free Dictionaries, Free Encyclopedias, Free Online Meetings (Join.me) is a great one), Free Ads, Free Email, etc. Some of these Free Services don’t even have advertising on them, though that is the rarer case. Still, often an outstanding value and who really looks at ads much.

And, then there is Freemium. You get some base product and you get it with no charge (and often no Credit Card required) up until a certain limit of storage, usage, time or many other freemuim models. Free and Freemium are sometimes incredible values to the user.

That is where FreeVirtualDesktop.com comes in. What is a Free Virtual Desktop? For us it is a Free Cloud Desktop Delivery model that allows the user to have an Internet Desktop available to them based on Free or Freemium vendor services for the storage, bandwidth and CPU combined with an Open Source Desktop and Software.

The Free Virtual Desktop is coming soon. We have already had our first phase of Beta Tests and expect to have a more general full first release by the end of 2011. Hopefully, we will make it. You can read more about “What is a Free Virtual Desktop” on FreeVirtualDesktop.com or read about Free Virtual Desktop or better yet Free Cloud Desktop at Desktop Anywhere.

The Cloud moves a bit like the wind if you will. Each discreet movement forward seems to effect the whole movement a bit as well. The future is hard to predict, but in the case of the Cloud it is already here and it is merely next steps we are all trying to make educated guesses at.

Here is Geva’s article: 10 Predictions About Cloud Computing

What will we have in the Cloud and when will we it? It tends to be harder to predict when something will happen than what will happen. The farther out the idea, the more difficult it is. The closer the idea, the easier it is to predict.

We predict that you will have one by the end of this month (December 2011). Let’s see how good our crystal ball is.

But we are really close now to a lot of things. I am struck by how much the Virtual Desktop is often forgotten when few really have adopted them near as much as they could. I am also struck by the lack of the inclusion of Free and Freemium in the discussion of such as this tends to be a pattern. Think of emails and online storage. We are getting really, really close to a Free Virtual Desktop at Desktop Anywhere. Like end of 2011 close.

Check in over this month and we hope to have our Public Beta Program in its initial form during this month and you can get your own Free Virtual Desktop.

The term Server Hugger has been around a while and is on point. We once considered inventing a Placebo Server. This would be no more than a black box with a red light on it to let people see what was in the cloud.

Now the PC Huggers need to let go too. This article from Kevin Fogarty is on point but any one that has used the Free Virtual Desktop can tell you, software oriented to hardware is an old idea to a large degree.

Using a Free Virtual Desktop is surprisingly easy, once you get the hang of it. There is not much difference that using any other desktop, except maybe your primary desktop. There is not difference, as far as we can tell, between a Free Cloud Desktop and a Free Virtual Desktop.

Most people have a number of desktops and device interfaces they are using already. You probably have more than one Computer Desktop just in your home. And then there are laptops, tablets, smart ph0nes, work PCs, ones you use at other people’s houses or offices, PCs in common areas, etc. Access is a good thing, but all those interfaces, Operating Systems, devices, configurations, rules, security concerns, etc. can be inconvenient, frustrating and sometimes a little scary from a security standpoint.

The Free Virtual Desktop can help with those issues. You still have to be very careful and mindful of security on any machine, especially one that is accessed in a common area. But as far as getting to all your stuff in a convenient and reliable way, the Free Virtual Desktop makes a great companion. Your Desktop away from your Home Desktop. For some, it is their H0me Desktop.

And that is a beautiful thing brought to your by your own personal Cloud.

Corporate IT is concerned and often making the wrong choices to that end. The often start, understandably, from deny, deny, deny. It can’t infect your network if it can’t get to it. Unfortunately, employee productivity and satisfaction are kind of critical. Being told, sure you have to work from home and on vacation, but where you’re here, no personal stuff and here is what you have to use. IT is not very popular with anyone when taking this stance.

Above all employees need to be efficient and certainly there are times when bringing a device is the answer. When are people going to realize that the device itself is the problem. Why carry around a device to connect to a network that is connected to the Internet?

More on this in the blog side later. Virtual Desktops and The Cloud really bring the most cost effective answer to doing work in a viable way. And you can’t get much more cost effective than a Free Virtual Desktop.

Anyway, here is the article on the device based trend.
